Expensive though it may be, bottled water has never been more off the shelves.

Tap water, however, isn’t really on people’s list of something to drink.

Many think somehow tap water is infected, whereas ready-made bottled water is safe. However, a new research in England suggests the opposite.

The pricey bottled water goes through far less stringent testing than tap water, the scientists found out. They are only required a monthly testing.

Tap water contains disinfecting chlorine. It stops the spread of harmful bacterial infections.

Bottled water, however, contains no such ingredients.

Once opened, it goes bad immediately, so it must be consumed within days.

"Water coming from U.K. taps is the most stringently tested in the world," said Prof. Paul Younger of Glasgow University, according to The Telegraph.

"People think there must be something wrong with tap water because it is so cheap and plentiful. But from a safety and price perspective, tap water is better for you," Younger explained.

Perrier had to recall millions of bottles worldwide in 1990. Benzene was found in the water. It is a toxic chemical that increases the risk of cancer and other diseases

생수병에 담긴 물은 비싸긴 하지만 판매대에서 내려간 적은 없다.

그런데 보통 수돗물은 사람들이 마실 물로 생각하진 않는다.

많은 사람들이 생수병에 담긴 물은 안전하고 수돗물은 미생물 등에 감염 됐을거라 생각한다.

하지만 최근 영국의 한 연구결과는 정반대의 결과를 제시한다.

생수병에 든 비싼물은 수돗물보다 검수 과정이 덜 까다롭다. 한 달에 한 번만 받으면 된다.

수돗물에 들어있는 염소는 살균작용을 하고 박테리아 감염이 진행되는 것을 방해한다.

생수병에 담긴 물에는 살균작용을 하는 성분이 없다.

한번 마개를 열면 바로 부패가 진행된다.

며칠 내 마셔야 하는 이유다.

“영국의 수도관을 거쳐서 오는 수돗물은 세계에서 가장 까다로운 검수를 거칩니다.”글래스고 대학의 폴 영거 교수의 말이다. 텔레그래프가 보도한 내용이다.

“사람들은 수돗물 값이 싸고 양도 많으니까 뭔가 문제가 있을 거라고 생각하죠. 그러나 안전 및 가격을 놓고 보자면 수돗물이 더 낫습니다.” 영거의 설명이다.

생수 회사 페리에(Perrier) 는 몇 백만병의 물을 거둬들인 적이 있다. 벤젠이 발견됐기 때문이었다. 벤젠은 암 등 기타 질병의 발생을 높이는 독극 화학 물질이다.
